You will play it at your 50th anniversary party and your grandkids will ask you what song you danced to at your wedding when they are planning their wedding. How can you pick a song you will be proud of for the rest of your life? It's a big decision...here are a few tips:

1. CHOOSE TOGETHER: Don't pick the song just because everybody else is using that one. The song you choose should be meaningful to you as a couple - it should be one that makes you both smile when your hear it or envokes a special memory.

2. CHECK THE LYRICS: Just because a song has a nice title doesn't mean it's a love song. Think about "I will always love you" by Dolly Parton which is a popular wedding song dance. However, it's actually a breakup song.

3. CHECK THE LENGTH: Don't pick too long of a wedding dance song. You've been to weddings, you know it get's boring after a couple of minutes.

4. MAKE SURE YOU CAN DANCE TO IT: There are a lot of beautiful songs out there that you just can't dance to without being awkward. Don't pick one of those!

Wedding Customs: Why Do We What We Do?

The ring, the cake, the bouquet, the bridemaids...why do people do what they do at their weddings?

The History of The Wedding Ring According to Today I Found It:

Some believe that the oldest recorded exchange of wedding rings comes from ancient Egypt, about 4800 years ago. Sedges, rushes and reeds, growing alongside the well-known papyrus were twisted and braided into rings for fingers an other decorative ornaments worn by the women in those days.

The circle was the symbol of eternity, with no beginning or end, not only to the Egyptians, but many other ancient cultures. The hole in the center of the ring also had significance. It wasn’t just considered a space, but rather a gateway, or door; leading to things and events both known and unknown. To give a woman a ring signifies never-ending and immortal love. READ MORE

The veiling of the bride has origins in the idea that she's vulnerable to enchantment, so she must be hidden from evil spirits. The Romans veiled brides in flame-colored veils to actually scare off those spirits.

Perhaps the most evil of spirits, in an arranged marriage, is the threat that the groom, who is perhaps seeing the bride for the first time, won't like what he sees. The veil saves everyone some embarrassment in the short term. READ MORE

Until modern times, brides did carry garlic and dill. The practice probably originated from the time of the Plague, when people clutched the herbs over their noses and mouths in a desperate effort to survive.

Survivors of great tragedy can affix tremendous protective powers to anything that has provided comfort, and the herbs made it into the ceremony marking renewal. Over time, brides added better-smelling flora to the arrangement, and a whole dictionary of meaning arose to define each type of blossom. READ MORE

The History of Bridesmaids According to eHow:

While in modern times a bridesmaid is expected to assist with anything the bride requests or needs, apparently her duties were of a more serious, if not at least supernatural, nature in earlier days. A custom once existed where maidens dressed similarly to the bride would accompany her as her protectors on her way to the groom's village. This would deflect spurned suitors from kidnapping the bride or from stealing her dowry. Roman law once required witnesses to come to weddings in order to confuse evil spirits as to the identity of the bride and groom. This meant that female wedding attendants came to a marriage ceremony in garments akin to the bride's, while male wedding attendants--the forebears of ushers--wore attire that resembled the groom's own clothing. This supposedly threw off bad luck that could be directed towards an easily identifiable bride and groom. READ MORE

The History of the Wedding Cake According to Let Them Eat Cake:

The wedding cake is a tradition that began back in the Roman Empire. At the time, it was a loaf of bread that the groom broke over the bride’s head as a symbol of his dominance in the marriage. The color of the cake was typically white to symbolize purity. The joint task of the bride and groom cutting the cake was meant to symbolize their first joint task in married life. The gesture of feeding cake to one another was a symbol of the commitment the bride and groom are making. READ MORE

This is especially true when it comes to the jewelry you choose. How can you make a choice that will make you sparkle with confidnece? Here are a few do's and don'ts o choosing wedding jewelry:

DO stick to a budget:There are many ways to cut down on the cost of your wedding jewely if budget is a concern. You can consider renting or borrowing the jewelry if you are set on having real but don't have the budget to purchase it.

DO let your personality shine:Don't lose your personal style in the process of chosing your jewelry. Every bride should add her own touches to her bridal ensemble. If your a simple, natural kind of girl, then maybe just a strand of pearls will do. If you are adventurous and fun-loving, then have some color!

DO match the style of your wedding dress: A modern dress probably won't be accented well by vintage jewelry unless that jewelry has an ageless design. On the other hand, a vintage dress won't look right with super modern jewelry.

DO consider the neckline: Rounded necklines on wedding dresses usually look best with a choker or a simple set of short pearls while a V-shaped neckline looks great with a pendant style necklace.

DON'T over-do-it: Jewelry should accentuate you gown, not compete with it. If your wedding dress has a lot of lace or heavy embroidery, then choose dainty pieces to compliment it. However, if your gown is simple, then by all means, go big and bold with your jewelry.

DON'T procrastinate: You should start looking for jewelry as soon as you choose your wedding gown. You do not want to wait until the last minute and have to settle for something you aren't completely in love with.

Creative Alternatives to Traditional Wedding Cake

Many couples are straying from the traditional wedding cake these days. Here are some tips to make sure your invitations reflect your vision of your special day.

GET INSPIRED: Look at invitations in stores and online for inspiration. Stick to the theme of your wedding. If you are having a casual, outdoor wedding - then have a casual invitation to set the mood. If you are having an elegant wedding - then choose elegant invitations.

CONSIDER YOUR BUDGET: Invitations can range from less than $1 if printed at home to $5 or more. Consider how many invitations you will need and set a budget.

CHOOSE YOUR FONT: A simple font allows you to put more wording on your invitation. The fancy fonts only look good in larger type-sizes. If you have your heart set on a particular fancy font, consider using a combination of fonts, with your names in a larger, more elaborate font and the rest of the text in a simpler, smaller font.

RSVP CARDS: You definitely need them if you are having a sit down dinner. Think of it this way: just two dinners you pay for uneccessarily would equal the average price of RSVP cards.

Pretty much everything else will somehow be influenced by this choice. So where do you even start?

Here are some ideas to get your creativity flowing...

Your favorite color - seems obvious right? But it's a great place to start.

The season - pretty pastels for spring or fall foliage for autumn.

The setting - bright colors for an outside setting or darker more dramatic colors for a formal setting.

Your culture - picking your colors based on culture or tradition is a great way to pay homage to your roots.

How can you relax before your big day so that you can actually enjoy the most important time of your life?

Here are 5 Tips:

1. Take care of yourself. You may be busier than ever but instead of running to the drive-through be sure to eat healthy balanced meals and workout for at least half an hour each day. This will go along way in making you feel better.

2. Don't forget about your fiance. With all the planning and running around it's easy to forget about your fiance so take out time to talk to him and go on "wedding planning free" dates.

3. Keep a journal. It's been proven that writing down your feelings can help you process them. If your feeling stressed about certain aspects of your wedding, write about it. Be sure to write about your happy feelings as your wedding day approaches as well. And who knows, maybe one day you will read these journals to your grandkids.

4. Take a time-out. You don't have to eat sleep and breathe weddings. Remember to take time out to focus on your family and friends and have conversations that don't revolve around your wedding.

5. Pamper yourself. It's ok! You are about to make one of the biggest decisions of your life so don't be afraid to get a massage, take a long bath, get a pedicure, get a facial, take a nap...whatever works for you.

Here are some ideas on how to make it fun and relaxing so you won't be stressed out the night before your big day.

LOCATION INSPIRATION:

Your Favorite Restaurant: Why not have everybody meet and you and your groom's favorite dinner spot? Call to see if they have a room you can reserve or just if they would set aside several tables for you.

Make It a Picnic: What's more relaxing than a day in the park? Look for a park that allows you to reserve picnic pavillions. This is a great way for the families to relax together and enjoy the outdoors.

Don't Go Anywhere: Why not have everybody over to your home? If it's too much stress to do it at your house, why not ask your parents or your future in-laws. Parents love to be involved and feel like they are contributing.

THE THEME AND THE FOOD:

Who Says It Has to Be Dinner?: Everybody loves brunch so why not plan a rehearsal brunch, then you can have the whole evening before your wedding to relax. Don't forget the mimosas!

Wine Tasting: Who doesn't love a good wine tasting? Choose 6 - 8 wines and pair them with appetizers and you're all set.

Honeymoon Inspired: If you're going somewhere on your honeymoon, why not make your destination your theme?

Grill Out: What could be more simple than throwing some hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill. Through in some ice cold beer and everybody's happy.

ACTIVITIES/GAMES:

The point of the rehearsal dinner is to let the families get to know each other a little better. Here are a few ways to make that easier.

Icebreaker: Write questions abou the bride and groom individually on pieces of paper, place them in a hat and pass the hat around for everyone to pull from. Once everyone’s had a chance to read their question, go around the table and have each person read their question and give their answer. How did you meet the bride/groom? How did the groom propose? What is your first memory of the bride/groom?

Bride & Groom Trivia: Have the bride and groom come up with 10-12 trivia questions about themselves and their relationship, such as: What town was the groom born in? What did the couple go on their first date? Divide the guests into small groups. Make sure you don’t stick all the people who know each other in one group, mix it up! If your group knows each other well, make the questions a little harder. Print out the questions and give a print out to each group. Give them 10 -15 minutes to complete the list and then see who knows them best. Provide a small prize for each member of the winning team.

What are their interests...horses, princesses, superheros? Try to come up with your theme a few months before the party, this way you can pick up party items over time. This will help with expense and won't be as stressful as trying to do it all at once.

GUEST LIST: The number of guests depends on several things: the age of the children, the venue, the budget and the theme. Decide on a number of guests that fits these criteria and stick to it.

SCHEDULE: Plan a schedule of activities. This doesn't need to be a rigid schedule but just a basic flow of how you would like things to go, but always remember you're dealing with kids so be prepared to make adjustments.

Here is an idea for a 2 hour party:

15 minutes - greet guests

30 minutes - organized games and activities

20 minutes - refreshments

20 minutes - organized games and activities

20 minutes - free play and unstructured activities

15 minutes - hand out goody bags and say goodbyes

MENU: Plan around the theme. Be sure to make it kid-friendly - finger foods are always best. Plan some healthy options in addition to all of the sugary treats.

GET HELP: You don't want to tackle several little kids on your own. Be sure to recruit help. Older siblings of the guests may be willing to help out.

GOODY BAGS: This is a nice way to thank your guests for coming. They don't need to be anything fancy - just a few sweets and little toys is fine.

RELAX: At the end of the day, it's just a kid's party so lighten up and just have fun!
